Narrative Story Timothy Chung 5/24/12 L&L 1 Mrs. Dabrush It's an afternoon of a Spring time when the sky is clear with wind breezing through the window of the van. Rob and I are heading off to a State Champion of Computer Coding. As we approach the building of the competition we can hear music blasting out of the 10 feet tall speakers with surround sounds. Rob and I were pumped and ready to do some coding and win it all. But as we were walking to the entrance to sign in, I saw my worst nemesis, Tony. Him and I have been competing against each other for a total of 3 years but every time he would win. “How ya doing there Loser!” Tony boasted as he walked by. “Don't worry about it Tony, just worry what you'll do after I beat you!” I replied with. I gave him a dirty look and walked over the sign up table. “Hi, my names Dan Wolf.” I told the receptionist. “Let's see, Dan Wolf, your first competitor will be Steve Lad.” she informed me. I was starting to get nervous as I took a seat next to Rob because this was going to be the last chance for us to win since the competition is only for high schoolers and both of us are seniors. The competition is about to start where we will be given a task against another competitor and see who is able to decode the information the quickest. As a person leads me to a seat with a computer inside, I see my competitor at the other seat with a computer facing me. “Good luck!” I yelled over as a good sport. “Thanks you too!” he replied. As we waited for the countdown for the start my hands began to sweat showing how nervous I was. DING! It all started, and my fingers got to work. Next to my computer screen there was another screen showing me the percentage I have done decoding the code and once I reach 100% I would be finished, the screen would also show the percentage of my opponent.
(20 minutes later)
We're 20 minutes into the first competition and I look at the screen seeing that I am 90% done but my competitor was 93% and I started to feel the pressure. My hands got so sweaty that I had to wipe them off with my shirt but not long after I would have to wipe them off again.
(3 minutes later)
I'm almost done tied up with the other competitor at 98% and the audience started to talk trying to guess who would win. I knew that for me for win I had to stay focus and keep my fingers moving. At the corner of my eye I saw that both of us were at 99% and that this would be a close call. BEEP! The alarm went off meaning that one of the competitor has finished. My whole body began to shake as I slowly looked at a large screen announcing who was the winner. At that moment when I saw my name I got so excited that I flew out of my chair. But at that very same moment my competitor was starring right at me with the eyes of a devil. I tried to be nice by going over and say, “Nice try.” But right after I said that his fist swung right up my chin knocking me out. As I woke up I realized that I was in an ambulance due to the loud sirens and the constant motion. There was a severe pain in my jaw so I thought that it might have broken. “That boy did hit you hard.” the doctor said. “How bad is it?” I questioned. “Well, you might have a fractured jaw.” There was so much pain that I fainted again. The next time I woke up I found myself lying on a bed in the hospital. Next to me was my mom who was scared to death when she got the phone call from the hospital at work. “Dan are you ok? I came here as soon as I heard what happened!” my mom said worriedly. “I'm fine mom. Really I am.” I told her even though I knew I wasn't. It was around 8:00 when my mom decided to get some dinner for me. After my mom left, the boy who punched me came into my room and I was filled with fear when he walked beside the bed. “I'm sorry for what I've done to you today.” he started in a sorrowful voice. I didn't know what to say because I didn't want him to punch me again, but I then found something to say. “That's alright, my names Dan Wolf. What's yours?” I said steadily and slowly. “Nice to meet you Dan. I'm Randal Jasp and I'm really sorry for what I did to you, it was just all the things that was going through my mind.” he replied in a friendly tone. “What was going thorough your mind?” I questioned. “Well when I was young around 8 my dad passed away in a car accident but he always wanted me to become a computer programmer. So by doing that I applied for the competition and this was the last year for me to win for my dad. But since I lost I feel like I failed him.” he started to look sad. “It's ok, I'm also with you, when I was young my dad also died too and he was also a computer programmer so a way to become him I decided to apply for the competition.” after I told him that I felt like he was a kind of mine. Somehow I felt like him and I were close and I could see in his eyes that he felt the same. “I've never found anyone that had the same goal of computer programming because of their lost ones.” he stated slowly. “I've never found anyone like you too.” I replied. At that very moment my mom returned with 2 chicken sandwich in her hand. “Sorry, did I interrupt you two?” she questioned as she walked in. “No that's ok, I was just about to go.” Randal answered. “Are you sure? You're welcome to stay longer if you want.” I offered. “It's alright, I have to go home to eat my dinner. Say, do you have a Facebook account?” he asked. “Yes I do, so I guess I'll “friend” you on Facebook and we'll keep in touch.” I replied. After Randal left my mom came over and gave me the sandwich, “The doctor said that you're going to have to stay for a night here so I'm going to go home and grab things for you, so finish both the sandwich before I came back” she informed me. As she left I took out my iPhone and went on my Facebook account and quickly searched for Randal Jasp and there he was the first one with a picture of him on a computer. After I sent him a friend request I clicked the “check in” button where I could tell others where I was since I was in the hospital. Right after I posted it, a notification pops up saying that Rob commented, “How you feeling? You took a heavy hit.” I clicked the reply button say, “I'm doing fine but the doctor said I have to stay for a night.” At that moment my eyes lids began to feel really heavy and I fell asleep into a nightmare. I was having a flashback to the day where I was with my dad when he passed away. Both of us were returning back home from a baseball game of the Red Sox vs. Yankees and the score was 3-2 Red Sox winning. Both of us had a great time together eating the juicy sausages, cracker jacks, and most of all cheering together for the Red Sox. It was one of those few times I got to spend time with my dad because he was a full time work and usually over the night. Therefore, cherished every single moment I had with him. But it was the ride home where everything went wrong, I was in the car listening to, Kiss 108, and the next thing I knew, we were flipped upside down. Our car was hit my a pick-up trick when the driver tried to run a red light. The car was flipped with the airbags activated, but the seatbelt was stuck. Luckily, we had a seatbelt cutter in the car front passenger cabinet and with that I got out easily. But it was different for my dad, his legs were stuck and he couldn't move out of there. When I was next to him I began to hear some water droplets and looked around, the gas tank was leaking. “Get out of here.” my dad commanded with a weak voice. “I'm not leaving you dad!” I screamed back. He immediately replied, “You get back to stay safe, and do everything you mom tells you to do in the future. Do you hear me!” his voice became more powerful, but I did as I was told and got away from the car. I heard sirens approaching so I turned my head toward the way the sound was coming. But as soon as I turned back to look at the car, there was a huge explosion of the car. I starred at the burning car with my eyes trickling with tear drops every and as more rain drops came to my eyes I tried to run to see my dad but I was held back by the firemen who pulled me 20 feet back where the firetruck was. I couldn't stop crying as the image of the car exploding kept going through my mind. My whole body began to shake because of fear and just as anything else happened I woke back up. I was dripping sweat everywhere, I started to breathe hard, and I began to cry thinking about what happened that day. At that very moment my iPhone rang showing a notification on Facebook that Randal had accepted my friend request. I felt lonely and since he was on Facebook too I began to chat with him. We talked about our fathers and how we spent our times with them when they were with us, and from that moment on, I knew that Randal Jasp was going to become a good friend of mine and that we would keep in touch by using Facebook.
